Different distances from 20 to 55 km let participants discover the green forest edge between Zonnebeke and Ypres. With the Gasthuisbossen, the Polygoonbos, the De Palingbeek Provincial Park and the Verdronken Weiden, we are firmly committed to nature. Along the way, you'll pass several UNESCO First World War sites and numerous lesser-known war cemeteries. There's a walking challenge for every participant! Each route is unique and features plenty of refreshment points.
This is our story
The concept of the Poppieswlak grew out of the Via Sacra - Western Front Way, a 1000 km long walking route that connects the entire Western front line between Nieuwpoort in Belgium and the Swiss Pfetterhouse. Of these, 96 kilometers run through the Westhoek, where the Western Front Trail is designed to become a place to walk, reflect on the atrocities of the war and a lasting memory of the fallen during the First World War. The Poppieswalk 2026 was a day that offered more than just walking. It was a reminder of the past. A celebration of collaboration. And a wonderful example of how walking can bring people together.
Just over 4,000 walkers discovered a slice of the Westhoek in all its glory between Ypres and Zonnebeke. Woodland, nature reserves, private land, open views and, of course, the numerous World War I memorial sites.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE ?
Participation at the Poppieswalk is only possible through pre-registration. Registration on the day itself is not possible. There is a choice between different distances, ranging from 18 to 55 km. The various distances always depart from a different partner city. All distances end in the vicinity of the Passchendaele Memorial Museum in Zonnebeke.
